On October 18, 2001 I gave birth via section to my handsome 7lbs 10oz boy (Lil'Cesar). My due date according to my menstrual cycle was October 15. According to an ultrasound it was October 18. By October 18 I still wasn't showing any signs of labour--my health was fine. I had gained 55 pounds and my baby was supposedly big. These were the reasons twhy the doctor decided to induce me. I really didn't want to be induced. I didn't think that these were sufficient reasons. But he managed to convince me it was "necessary". After various hours of contractions, I only managed to dialate 2 cms so I had a c-section. I never thought that delivering via c-section would have such an emotional impact on my life. My baby was born with Jaundice and I felt guilty for it. I felt that if I had just let nature take its course, and not listened to the doc I would had delivered vaginally and my baby would had been fine. Anyway, I went throught denial, telling myself that the induction was indeed necessary. But when I asked another doctor about it, he informed me that those were not sufficient reasons for induction. That tore me apart. In addition, yesterday, my sister told me how my cousin's wife went through the same thing with the same doctor--that really deppressed me. Last nightI was up at 4am blaming myself for being so stupid and going through the induction. SIGH. Luckily I have a wonderful and caring husband. He told me that "I should had" does't exist. That it's NOT my fault. That I shouldn't let the past haunt me. But I can't stop thinking about it. This has really impacted my life tremedously. Let me tell you, everyone has moments of "If I had done..." or "I should have...". We rely on our doctors to recommend the best for us. Maybe we shouldn't do that. I was also induced 2 weeks before my due date due to pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes. They too were afraid that he would be big. He was just under 6 pounds, though. I had a really hard labor and delivery and remember little more than the incredible pain. (I had other complications too). I went through a year or more of what ifs. And I still do feel like that sometimes. But, I decided it didn't do me or my family any good to continue to berate myself. I did what I thought I should have done at the time. Everyone makes mistakes. And, it may be that a C-Section was the best thing for you. You said that you contacted another doctor after the fact and he said that the reasons you were given were not enough for a C-section. Remember, this new doctor didn't have all the information the other doctor had. There may have been more than met the eye. My beautiful son has been the catalyst for me to move on. I am not saying that the things I endured will be forgotton, but everytime I look at my son, I thank God that he is happy and healthy. And, I have learned a lot about taking my medical care into my own hands. Unfortunately, I will never be able to have another baby and I wish that I had enjoyed the pregnancy more and been more prepared and coherant for the delivery. But, I can't change the past. But I use the lessons I learned to enjoy every second with my family. Also, I am no longer "afraid" to ask questions of the doctor and to insist on tests/treatments. I am no longer afraid of "offending" the doctor by asking for a referral for a second opinion, etc. I know it is easier said than done, but try to use the experience to make decisions in the future. I hope in some small way this has helped. And, we are always here for you. Take care, Michelle
